One day every year, the Copake Grange becomes the “Cupcake Grange.” It’s a sweet event, literally; the cupcakes are creative, confectionery masterpieces. There will be 1,000 cupcakes for sale at $1 apiece, and a competition for the Ultimate Copake Cupcake, announced at our Awards Ceremony at 1:00pm. There's nothing better than having a cupcake with friends and meeting new people. Join the cupcake brigade and be part of the baking and/or set-up/sales crew. Join the Grange & experts Marian Sole & Mayuko Fujino of the Alan Devoe Bird Club (ADBC) for a guided walk at Ancram's Sky High Farm. We’ll visit their 560-acre farm (formerly Sigler Dairy Farm) where we’ll learn about their regenerative farming practices, and how wildlife & bird and nature conservation helps to grow nutritious food. Founded in 1957, ADBC promotes the conservation of natural resources and the enjoyment and protection of birds, flora, and fauna. If you are new to fly fishing, or are already a pro, you’re sure to learn something new as he gives us a demonstration of fly lure tying, a history of fly fishing, area history and fishing area streams, and some do’s and don'ts. Then, enjoy a fly casting demonstration with audience participation. As Bill says “I’ve been at this for over 50 years. New discoveries are happening every day.” This event is FREE, and recommended for ages 10 through adult. Reservations (email copakegrange@gmail.com) are not required but recommended. Rods aren’t necessary, but you may bring your own.

Clean out your storage bins and exchange for what you need for your kids! Our Kid’s Swap & Sale is a time to exchange clothing, toys, and gear that’s been gently used for babies, toddlers and young children. A few items will be for sale. All sales benefit the Grange, and free donations are appreciated. Donation drop-off times will be Tues May 13, 4-5pm; Fri May 16, 1-3 pm; and Thur May 23, 12-1pm. Israeli clarinetist Itay Dayan and his band (Paul July Joseph, percussion; Nick Isherwood, bass; Nadav Brenner, guitar) arrive at the Grange to present a program of traditional and original music. Varied and flexible, they perform traditional Eastern European Jewish music (klezmer) as well as Yiddish songs, and songs in Hebrew influenced by Middle Eastern popular music. The Two Of Us Productions presents “Karaoke Night at the Grange”, an evening where new stars are born! Get a chance to be on stage and sing along with your favorite artists. Expect an evening of warm fun and music in the Grange’s intimate theater with its great acoustics and comfortable seating. The Copake Conservation Advisory Committee, Friends of Taconic State Park, and Copake Grange present a special Earth Day presentation: “The Plastic Pollution Crisis.” Find out about the many dangers that plastic pollution causes to humans and other animals and plants globally on land, in water and in the air, and about the economic costs to clean up and detoxify our planet's environment of plastic wastes. The foci of the presentation will range from the global perspective to current efforts in New York State to address plastic waste. Speaker Kristin Shevis of the organization “Beyond Plastics” will make an informative presentation you should hear. This event is Free. The Grange annual Pick up Litter Day is a day of beautification for Copake, including Copake Falls, Copake Lake, West Copake and Craryville. Pick up along the roads by your house, or any other roads you’ve noticed need a spring cleaning! You can meet at 9AM at the Grange to pick up trash bags if you choose.  You may take your collection to the transfer station on Center Hill Road or drop it that day in the dumpster at Copake Town Hall. (If the dumpster at Town Hall is full, do not leave your trash bags on the ground; take them to the transfer station.) We'd love for people to take photos and email them to copakegrange@gmail.com.

The April meeting will begin at 9:00 am with a buffet breakfast to welcome the many new members who have joined the Grange recently, as well as those who have applied to join but not been inducted.  Full breakfast will be available buffet-style. At 10:00 am, our regular monthly business meeting will begin with the induction of new members. "Mississippi Burning", based on true events, is a fictionalized version of the FBI's search for the killers of three civil rights workers in the South in 1964. Watch the trailer here. Starring Gene Hackman, Willam Dafoe and Frances McDormand, it was directed by Alan Parker and won an Academy Award for best cinematography. Cold Chocolate is a genre-bending Americana band that fuses folk, funk, and bluegrass to create a unique sound all their own. Featuring Ethan Robbins on guitar, Ariel Bernstein on percussion, and backed by some of the root's music scene's finest players, this group from Boston is impressing audiences throughout New England and beyond. Punctuated by tight harmonies and skillful musicianship, and with a focus on songwriting, Cold Chocolate has quickly gained recognition for their original music and high-energy shows. The band has shared bills with Leftover Salmon and David Grisman, and regularly performs at venues and music festivals across the country. Join us for a series of 3 children’s art making classes, for children ages 7 to 18. Grange members Liz Fenamore and Deborah Macheski will conduct a hands-on session where kids can learn to make their own creative projects. This class will be dedicated to the art of book making. The Copake Conservation Advisory Committee and Copake Grange present an informational lecture on the many benefits of planting and maintaining native trees and shrubs along streams. Participants will also be provided with some tips for assessing the current health of their streamside areas, as well as resources to help maintain and improve the trees and shrubs along the streams nearby. The talk is led by Beth Roessler, Stream Buffer Coordinator for NYS DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program, in collaboration with Cornell University’s Water Resources Institute. Since 2011, her work on the “Trees for Tribs” program has helped protect the water quality and wildlife in the tributary streams of the Hudson River. The program is made possible in part by Stewart's Shops and the Ackerman Foundation. This event is free and open to the public.

In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, the Grange Classic Film series presents "The Quiet Man", a 1952 romantic comedy-drama directed and produced by John Ford, starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara and Barry Fitzgerald.

After accidentally killing an opponent in the ring, boxer Sean Thornton leaves America and returns to his native Ireland, hoping to buy his family's homestead and live in peace. Instead, he falls in love with a fiery redhead, whose angry and spiteful brother tries to block the marriage.

The film features Winston Hoch's lush photography of the Irish countryside and won the Academy Award for Best Director and for Best Cinemotography. Classic Film Series organizer, Lenny Barham, will provide commentary and insights. Stay after the movie for dinner: soup, salad, bread and dessert. Movie admission is by donation. Dinner is $10.
